My eleven random things...
1. My thumbs are double jointed. This means that I can bend them behind my hand like this.
I can also bend them back at weird angles toward my wrist, but it was difficult to take a photo of that.
And also, I was afraid that it would really gross out all of my readers.
2. When there's a food that I really love (and I really love a LOT of foods), I envision either swimming in a giant vat of it or eating my way out of a room made out of it. For example, diving head first into a vat of whipped cream? Yes, please. Eating my way out of a room made of french fries? I'm in.
3. From sixth grade through my sophomore year, I played the trumpet. I miss it. I didn't really want to quit band, but it got to a point where balancing honors classes with band wasn't working for me. I still remember the fingering, but I doubt that I could get my lips to do anything with a trumpet again!
4. I really, really do not like the dark and I'm a big chicken about it. Once I was housesitting for someone and the lights went off at 11pm. It wasn't during a thunderstorm and I could see the lights from the house across the street, so in that split second, I convinced myself that a serial killer cut the lights and was waiting to kill me. Because it wasn't my house and I wasn't comfortable with the layout, I opted to crawl to the front door (note: this was before the time of big, giant smart phones that could be used as a light). With each movement forward, I convinced myself that I was going to put my hand down on someone's shoe. When I finally crawled to the front door, I saw that all the lights on my side of the street were also out so it likely wasn't a serial killer. Still, I was too freaked to go back inside until the lights went on, so I ended up driving around for two hours!
5. I write with a combination of cursive and print.
6. My ears are double pierced. I rarely ever wear earrings. I can still painfully push earrings through the first piercing, but I'm not sure I could do the second row.
7. I haven't had a whole lot of embarrassing teaching moments (knock on wood), but once in my first year of teaching, my bellybutton ring somehow came loose and fell out on the floor. I didn't notice it and a boy said, "Here, you dropped your earring!" As he handed it to me, he realized it wasn't an earring and turned eight shades of red. Suffice to say, I stopped wearing jewelry in my bellybutton shortly after that!
8. I really, really strongly dislike winter. I am so thankful that we've had a mild winter this year (PLEASE STAY THAT WAY) because cold, ice, and snow are not my thing. Maybe someday I'll move to a warmer climate.
9. I have no interest in going on a cruise, ever. None. Give me land beneath my feet at all times, thank you.
10. I don't really think I'll ever run a marathon, but if the opportunity to run the Big Five Marathon presented itself, I'd start training tomorrow.
11. If I could afford any sort of regular pampering, it'd be massages. I love massages!
My answers to Bari's questions...
1. What's your go-to, pumps you up every time, workout song?
Oh, this is embarrassing. My running playlist is so lame. I love it when Obadiah Parker's version of "Hey Ya" comes on. Totally gets me moving.
2. Cat or dog?
Dog! Not to say that I don't like cats, but I love big sloppy smelly dogs.
3. Team Jacob or Team Edward?
Jacob, all the way. Edward makes Bella so whiny and gross. I'm actually not a huge fan of the Twilight novels because I think they send mixed messages about appropriate relationshpis and co-dependency, but I did read them all.
4. Beer, wine or mixed drink, and what's your favorite?
I'll take one of each. Okay, funny story. I never drank beer at all until I started running, then I craved it. Now I love Goose Island 312. But I also love sweet wines, like moscato and riesling. And I will never, ever turn down a delicious martini or frozen margarita.
5. Do you have a "good luck" charm of some kind when you race? (a hat you always wear, hair always in the same style, lucky undies, etc)
I don't! I'm pretty random and will just throw on whatever is comfy.
6. What's your favorite iPhone or Android app and why should I download it (if it's iPhone)?
I love instagram for photo sharing. I love Hanging with Friends and Scramble with Friends, but I wish Zynga apps weren't so buggy.
7. Have you always had the same career and was it what you originally studied?
Yes! I declared my major freshman year of college. I knew I wanted to be a teacher. There are times when I wonder if I'd do it over again, though.
8. Have you ever run in a costume and what was it?
Nope, but I did wear a Team Sparkle skirt in the last mud run I did and plan on wearing it in the next mud run I do.
9. Who would play you in a movie about your life, and who would play your significant other?
I've always heard that I look like Winona Ryder, even as a kid people called me Lydia after her character in Beetlejuice. Sometimes my students say I look like Drew Barrymore, but I don't really see that one. I think Tobey Maguire could play Shane, maybe? I don't know!
10. Do you have a nickname, and if yes, what is it?
I do. I never had a nickname until I was married. My first year of teaching, a lot of coworkers shortened my last name and called me Charpie. It stuck!
11. If you could eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
This is hard, because I generally love all of the foods, but I'm going to go with french fries. Big piles of french fries.
I'm cheating and not tagging people! Sorry! I have such a hard time keeping up with who has done this and who hasn't. If you want to participate, I will ask 11 questions and I'd love to see the answers of anyone who is reading.
1. What is your greatest accomplishment?
2. If you had to wear just one color for the rest of your life, what color would it be?
3. What is something you've never done that you wish you could do?
4. If you were on death row and had to choose a last meal, what would that meal be?
5. What was your favorite childhood toy?
6. Is there an item that you wish existed, that you'd invent if you only knew how?
7. If you could enter any TV show, movie or book, what would it be?
8. What's your biggest pet peeve?
9. Do you have any hueg fears (like my fear of the dark!)? What are they and how do they affect you?
10. Do you have a nickname? What is it? (I really like this question!)
11. Tell me about a defining moment in your life.

If I could only wear one color for the rest of my life it would be red. Red isn't my favorite color but I think it's flattering and available in shades that fit nearly every mood.
Okay I have to leave your blog now, your thumb freaks me out.
freaky thumb!! ;-) I totally want to see pictures of your other thumb tricks.
My handwriting is a mixture, too. I also have my ears double-pierced, only I *think* I can still get an earring through ONE of the second holes.
312 is the bomb. I want one RIGHT NOW.
I love memes, too! So of course I'm going to do this one. :) And we have a lot in common...I have freaky thumbs, mix-y handwriting, love food...and some other stuff, too. :) My ears were pierced 3 times...I can still put earrings in the first one and one of the second but that's it. :P I let my belly button grow shut when I was pregnant with Aubry. Okay...now I need to go work on my post. :)
I don't have a blog, but I regularly stalk...um read...yours. So, I'll answer your questions! :). Seems only fair...
1. What is your greatest accomplishment? having my daughter.
2. If you had to wear just one color for the rest of your life, what color would it be? Purple
3. What is something you've never done that you wish you could do? Ride in a hot air balloon
4. If you were on death row and had to choose a last meal, what would that meal be? Fondue, a full meal of it.
5. What was your favorite childhood toy? My Teddy bear, Radar
6. Is there an item that you wish existed, that you'd invent if you only knew how? An app that let me put my grocery list and weekly menu in it. Then, it would "read" the store I was at and tell me what I needed to get in each aisle as I went down it.
7. If you could enter any TV show, movie or book, what would it be? Friends!
8. What's your biggest pet peeve? I have a lot...probably biggest is people who are always late.
9. Do you have any huge fears (like my fear of the dark!)? What are they and how do they affect you? I have a huge fear of drowning in my car. Hubby bought me a glass hammer for Christmas one year. Oh, and did I mention that I live in Colorado. And there are no substantial bodies of water anywhere near me.
10. Do you have a nickname? What is it? (I really like this question!) I have a lot. Hubby calls me cute girl, goof girl, or just goof. Em is the big one. My mom and dad have a lot for me too.
11. Tell me about a defining moment in your life. This is a hard one. But the one I choose is my Freshman year of college. I had a roommate that stole from us all year. Really taught me about who you can trust.
I loved your answers! Can I help you with that room full of french fries? There will be a cold 312 when we eat our way out :)
My handwriting is mostly printing with some messy cursive thrown in (even the printing is messy - I'd never make a good elementary teacher.)
And, the thumb thing? Ewww. My son can do the same with the thumb he dislocated last summer. He does that just to freak me out.
Oh my gosh, your thumb trick is CA-RAZY!
I too write in a combination of print and cursive. Nolan can't read my handwriting at all.
I absolutely loved the cruise that I went on. It is a no-hassle vacation- I loved that!
I also have read all the Twilight books and just don't understand the obsession. I just watched Eclipse (I think) on TV today and I think their movies are sooo poorly made. All of them. But for grown women to go ga-ga over these fictional characters? Pulease.
OHMYGAWDYOURTHUMB!!!
I hate winter. Like, a lot. I dream of moving.
And I totally get an "oh shit" feeling the instant the lights go out. Including the movie theatre.
I'll post mine too - you don't know me, but I follow your blog, so it's only fair to know something about us strangers out here. :)
1. What is your greatest accomplishment? My children
2. If you had to wear just one color for the rest of your life, what color would it be? Light gray - brings out the blue in my eyes
3. What is something you've never done that you wish you could do? I've always wanted to go to Ireland4. If you were on death row and had to choose a last meal, what would that meal be? Wow...probably some kind of chicken dish. I LOVE chicken, in any form of cooking - fried, grilled, baked... And either cheesecake or key lime pie for dessert. Yum!
5. What was your favorite childhood toy? I loved Lite Brite
6. Is there an item that you wish existed, that you'd invent if you only knew how? A hairdryer that would dry your hair into a set style without any followup care...sigh, if only!
7. If you could enter any TV show, movie or book, what would it be? Harry Potter, minus Voldemort...it just looks fun!
8. What's your biggest pet peeve? People who interrupt, and rude drivers!!!
9. Do you have any huge fears I have such a ridiculous fear of cockroaches that I tried to jump out of my friends car once, while going 45 on a very busy road, when her brother found one in the backseat! Thank goodness the doors were locked...it would not have been pretty! I live in the south, so roaches/palmetto bugs are very common...but even though I've lived in the south all my life, I can't get used to them!!! Ewww, ewww, ewww!
10. Do you have a nickname? Several - my "Pop" nicknamed me Mouser as a child. I have round cheeks, so I was called chipmunk cheeks in high school, and my childhood nickname was J-fer (I'm sure you can guess what my real name is...haha)
11. Tell me about a defining moment in your life. Wow - this is hard! Like another poster stated, also would have to be in my freshmen year of college. I lived in a suite with 6 other girls, and I had one girl who for some reason always singled me out to be mean to. I begged my parents to let me come home, and lived in fear of her attitude all year long (although she was never physical, just rude and demeaning). I would go to bed early to avoid her...I was pretty pathetic. FINALLY at the end of the year I got tired of being pushed around, and with the support of my other suite mates, who had been sick of her attitude, I finally had the gall to stick up for myself. Up until then I had always gotten along with everyone, so I just didn't know how to handle it. Ever since I stuck up for myself, she never bothered me again, and I learned from that time on not to ever let anyone treat me that way again.
I am stopping by from BR class. I see your are training for a half marathon.
i am supposed to be training myself but life has thrown in a few curve balls and at the moment I am not....I should pop in here for inspiration:)
Have a wonderful day!!
Leslie
I didn't know this about the trumpet. That is really cool. I will keep that in the back of my mind if ever needed...
I have the SAME handwriting and once I read that it means you are dishonest or secretive. I don't think that's true but then I wonder about myself. And the dark thing- that would have freaked me out. I would have probably been paralyzed with fear.
Oh, and I LOVE Hey Ya. Totally one that I can't resist and makes me tear up sometimes, too.
My answers:
1. (What is your greatest accomplishment?) Is it okay to say my children? Or maybe Ivy's homebirth? That felt amazing.
2. (If you had to wear just one color for the rest of your life, what color would it be?) black
3. (What is something you've never done that you wish you could do?) I wish I could snowboard or skateboard or actually do anything non-klutzy.
4. (If you were on death row and had to choose a last meal, what would that meal be?) Probably pad Thai
5. (What was your favorite childhood toy?) Barbies
6. (Is there an item that you wish existed, that you'd invent if you only knew how?) an self-cleaning house/sanitizer,like a self cleaning oven. All Jetsons style. Why does this not exist?
7. (If you could enter any TV show, movie or book, what would it be?) I want to be in Midnight in Paris. And never leave.
8. (What's your biggest pet peeve?) when people fish for compliments. Also I wish I could take a compliment appropriately and with grace.
9. (Do you have any huge fears (like my fear of the dark!)? What are they and how do they affect you?) -Huge fears are large bodies of water (that's why I also wouldn't go on a cruise)and that one of my kids will get lice again. So I am constantly checking their heads with DREAD. Constantly.
10. (Do you have a nickname? What is it?) My dad always called me Rudy- my middle name is Ruth. Also "grace" because I fall, a lot.
11. (Tell me about a defining moment in your life.) my life changed the day Noah started having seizures. I can't say that my life is worse now because of it, but my eyes were opened to things I had never knew were there- including amazing and incredible things that had previously gone unnoticed. It changed everything.
